This surgical treatment helps ensure we can safely and successfully apply a dental implant, even when there isn’t enough healthy bone tissue available. In some cases, patients may have reduced bone height in their upper jaw, which can affect their suitability for implant treatments. Sinus lifts can address this problem, however, using a bone graft to increase the bone height, and allowing us to successfully carry out a dental implant treatment.
Patients with missing teeth, or very damaged teeth can sometimes also experience a loss of bone height and density in the cavity of the sinus. It is, in fact, fairly common, and without a sinus lift would prevent a patient from receiving the dental implant they might so benefit from. Other reasons for needing a sinus lift include an accident to the face, gum disease, and complex tooth extraction.
During a sinus lift, a dental surgeon will graft bone between the upper jaw and the sinus membrane, where the back teeth/molars are. This in turn will allow us to apply a dental implant to the jaw, once the sinus lift has fully healed.
The area should fully heal within 4-9 months, after which we’ll be able to carry out your dental implant treatment. Immediately following the sinus lift treatment, you’ll have to come back into the practice 1-2 weeks afterward, so that we can keep an eye on your progress and make sure everything is healing as it should.
Swelling and pain in the area that has been treated are completely normal and can be treated with over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. You may also experience some bleeding from the mouth and nose – this should go away quickly, but if it persists, please get in touch with us here as soon as possible.
